One Hundred Not So Famous Views of LA
by Barbara Thomason

July 8 - August 29, 2010
In the Contemporary Gallery

Inspired by Hiroshige's series of woodblock prints, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, [now Tokyo], the artist Barbara Thomason represents views of Los Angeles that are less well known in this series. She actively incorporates the compositional approach to landscapes and the technique of bokashi, or color gradation, for which the Hiroshige's series are known. Thomason substitutes the famous places of Edo with iconic views of Los Angeles, which incorporate the distinctive wildlife and climate of these urban vistas. The results, painted on vinyl, are intimate and quirky, depicting the many facets of life in Southern California. The exhibition will include reference images of the Hiroshige works to make direct comparisons with the works on view.
