USC Pacific Asia Museum
Pasadena, California 91101
Open Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 6pm
I am honored to serve as Interim Executive Director during this exciting time for USC PAM. Museums are my passion. I became director of USC’s Fisher Museum in 1981 and my research in museum studies and art history further cultivated my interest in museology—the study of museums and their influences on shaping our culture. Art opens minds to issues around religion, history, beauty, politics and a host of connections and interactions in our global world. USC PAM embraces the connections between the cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands, so we think beyond the objects and contemplate the stories behind them and how they might affect us today.
This partnership advances the museum’s story. We should all be excited about the change—a richer story will emerge, with students and scholars enriching the educational experience, advancing art history and preserving the past.
I want to thank Margaret Leong Checca, who stepped in as Interim Executive Director after the departure of Charles Mason in 2013. We are extremely grateful for Margaret’s stewardship of the museum and her thoughtful leadership during the partnership discussions.
Also, I am delighted to welcome Susana Smith Bautista, PhD, who joins the staff as Interim Deputy Director. Susana received her MA in both Art History and Museum Studies in the USC Museum Studies Program that I directed for many years. She went on to earn a doctorate from USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism where she wrote her dissertation on museums in the digital age.
I look forward to meeting with donors, staff, longtime members and new, as we move into this exciting year of opportunity. Your continued support and dedication will be even more important as we shine additional light on the museum and showcase the true jewel that it is.
