Soie de Lune Luxurious Hand-Woven Silks
Soie de Lune (moon silk) was
founded by Anouphanethong
Thammavong, a French designer
born in Laos. The philosophy behind Soie
de Lune is to create luxurious hand-woven
silks using time honored traditions now all
but extinct in Laos and South East Asia.
The laborious process of preparing the
finest French and Chinese silk thread, using
all natural plant dyes, together with the
complex skills needed to weave it, combine
to produce exclusive silk scarves and shawls
unavailable outside the region until now.

Thammavong’s grandmother, a noble
of the royal Lao court, set up a weaving
workshop in the 1950s that would cater
to the ladies of the capital Vientiane in the
post-colonial world. She took traditional
hand-woven silks and modernized them – simplifying the complexities of patterns
and colors, while ensuring the resulting
textiles could fit into a traditional as well as
modern context.
Anouphanethong Thammavong carries
on his grandmother’s dream into the
21st Century, embracing her theme of
modernity from tradition, combining each
weaver’s particular skills to produce
luxurious, quality silks – each one a treasure.
An exquisite Soie de Lune shawl was featured
in the museum’s recent exhibition, Jade, Silk
and Porcelain: the Materials of Asian Art.
Pacific Asia Museum Store is pleased to be
