Community Outreach Coordinator, Full-Time
Pacific Asia Museum has received a three-year grant from the James Irvine Foundation to implement an audience development project that will create and sustain participation from targeted, underserved communities. The project’s main focus is the engagement of the Chinese American community of Alhambra, California.
The role of the Community Outreach Coordinator will be to support the Curator of Education, the Audience Development and Marketing Manager, and the Curator of Exhibitions and Programs in implementing this project and reaching out to the targeted communities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Serving as the representative of the museum in the community, including attending events, addressing groups, and speaking to community leaders
- Maintaining relationships with the museum’s community partners
- Identify opportunities for the museum to participate actively in community events and managing these events
- Assisting with on-site and community-based program development and implementation
- Helping develop targeted marketing plans and outreach materials
Skills Required: Fluency in Chinese; outstanding interpersonal skills; excellent public speaking ability; cultural sensitivity; ability to work independently.

The Getty Foundation’s Multicultural Undergraduate Summer Internships
Through the generous support of the Getty Foundation, Pacific Asia Museum is offering two summer internships in the following departments:
The Multicultural Summer Internship is intended to increase diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, and to provide support for local organizations.
The internships are intended specifically for outstanding students who are members of groups currently underrepresented in these professions: individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.
Eligibility for the internships will be limited to currently enrolled undergraduates who reside in Los Angeles County or attend college in Los Angeles County, will have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008, and will not graduate before December 2008.
Curatorial Intern
The Curatorial Intern will assist in the development of Pacific Asia Museum’s new Orientation Gallery.
Under the supervision of the Curator of Education and the Curator of Exhibitions, Programs, and Collections, the intern will research, plan and produce materials that introduces the visitor to the museum’s mission, collection, and exhibitions through it’s history and cultural context. This assistance will take the form of helping write label copy, create displays, and performing the myriad tasks involved in physically staging an exhibition.

Collections Intern
The Collections Intern will assist in the completion of the museum’s collections inventory and the environmental monitoring program.
Under the supervision of the Registrar, the Collections Management Intern will receive training in the proper handling of various types of artwork, how to accurately classify, measure, and describe artwork, and how to prepare condition reports. He/she will be involved in the day-to-day activities of installing and de-installing exhibitions and collections accessioning. The intern will be instructed in the use of the permanent electronic collections iO database.
The intern will be trained in all facets of monitoring and then be given primary responsibility for conducting the collection and analysis of the environmental information in the art storage and display areas. The intern will also assist with improvements to the museum’s collections storage.
