Museum Profiles: Ralph & Angelyn Riffenburgh
Ralph & Angelyn RiffenburghA few years ago Ralph and Angelyn Riffenburgh made a very generous donation to Pacific Asia Museum by naming Gallery 3, the Ralph and Angelyn Riffenburgh Gallery. Gallery 3 features Chinese Imperial ceramics and is one of the most important galleries in the Museum housing some of the collection’s finest treasures.

Ralph and Angelyn have had a long and wonderful affiliation with Pacific Asia Museum. After Angelyn took a class with Lennox Tierney, the man responsible for saving the Grace Nicholson building, they became fascinated with the Chinese palace-style structure and joined the Pacificulture Foundation. Angelyn joined the Docent Council in 1986 and continues to tour!

However, their interest in Asian art and culture began a decade before Pacific Asia Museum was founded. As a doctor, Ralph was involved with the Hospital Ship Hope when it was stationed in Vietnam in 1961. Part of the People to People Foundation, the Hospital Ship provided essential medical training and care to the local people. On his way to Vietnam, he visited Japan and Hong Kong. The entire experience sparked Ralph’s interest in Asian art and culture. It was ten years later that Ralph and Angelyn made their first of several trips together to Japan.

Both Ralph and Angelyn collected Japanese paintings, but later their interests broadened to include objects of everyday life, including tansu, inro, combs and textiles. Together they have visited many Asian and Pacific Island countries including Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Tibet, Sri Lanka, India, China, Pakistan, Burma/Myanmar, Australia and several others. They hope to return to Japan within the next few years.

We thank Ralph and Angelyn Riffenburgh for their dedication to the Museum and its mission. They are valued members of our community and we appreciate all that they have done to ensure Pacific Asia Museum’s continued success as a cultural institution in Southern California.

Imagine a room with elegant lighting and festive music. There are men and women dressed in Asian costumes or black-tie laughing with one another in an atmosphere of grace and splendor. There are tables filled with exquisite items such as porcelain, paintings, sculptures, jewelry and other treasures. There is a delicious dinner followed by dancing until midnight. Imagine yourself having a wonderful time at the 26th Annual Festival of the Autumn Moon.

Pacific Asia Museum is hosting the 26th Annual Festival of the Autumn Moon on Saturday October 4, 2003. In celebration of a new quarter century, this year’s gala will be held at the Pasadena Conference Center. Celebrating the Museum’s mission of furthering cultural understanding through the arts, the Festival will also feature a special tribute to commemorate the centenary of Korean immigration to the United States.

The Festival of the Autumn Moon is Pacific Asia Museum’s most important fundraiser. All proceeds from the event underwrite the Museum’s many education and exhibition programs. Your attendance and support of the Festival will help to ensure that Pacific Asia Museum continues to be a vital cultural resource for the community.

If you haven’t been to the Festival of the Autumn Moon before, this is the year to go. The event has been modified and rethought to accommodate a larger number of attendees while at the same time maintaining the best-loved elements such as the Silent and Live Auctions. There will be a costume contest. Come experience the party that the Los Angeles Times called “A-List.” We look forward to seeing you there!

Tickets are $200 per person. Black- tie or costume attire. For further information or for reservations, please call 626.449.2742 ext. 18.
