Getting Involved

Volunteers are integral to Pacific Asia Museum. Whether you’re looking for the best way to become involved, or are simply curious about what our volunters do, here’s an overview of the museum’s Arts Councils, Docent Council, and Service Council.

Arts Councils
Designed for those with a special interest in a certain region or culture, the Arts Councils are communities of people committed to Pacific Asia Museum’s mission of intercultural understanding. Like the cultures they represent, each council is unique. Some meet regularly, others get together to plan an event. The Councils – Chinese, Himalayan, Japanese, Korean, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippine and Thai – develop programs, serve as community liaisons, and enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a group dedicated to life-long learning. Becoming a member is simple; just call the membership department.

Docents
You may have met them on your first museum visit; they may even be the reason you returned. Touring with a friendly, knowledgeable guide can make all the difference in a museum visitor’s experience, and the Pacific Asia Museum docents are up to the challenge.

The training process is rigorous. Months of classes, writing assignments and presentations don’t just create highly qualified docents, however; it also creates a community. In fact, when asked what has kept her involved for 30 years, docent Lee Roberts immediately says it’s the people: “The museum is a little jewel box, and the docents are jewels.” Monthly meetings and special curator’s tours provide fellowship while keeping docents up to date and ready to do what they do best – sharing the museum they know and love.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
Assist the Collections Department with the 2007 Collections Inventory and really get to know the collection! Organizational skills, excellent attention to details, and the ability to stand are required. If interested, contact Bridget Bray, Registrar, at ext. 26 or b.bray@pacificasiamuseum.org.

Service Council
There is so much work to be done in a museum, and Service Council members are an essential part of the family! Providing critical staff support, members can be found throughout the museum; assisting in the Library, reparing mailings, working at special events and community outreach. They develop community events for museum visitors, as well as field trips and guest speaker programs for their own members. The Service Council includes many of our youngest volunteers; a large contingent of high school students provide service to the museum while developing their own professional skills – and maybe even an interest in a museum career.

With so many ways to get involved as a Pacific Asia Museum volunteer, there is truly something for everyone.
